The Problem
You're running a Shopify site for a E-commerce/Fashion business. Your products look great, your store runs smoothly, and you might even rank well on Google's traditional results. But there's a problem you probably don't know about: AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are almost certainly ignoring your entire site. When we analysed 20 UK fashion and e-commerce sites running on Shopify, we found that 74% were actively blocking GPTBot — the crawler that powers ChatGPT's knowledge — through a simple settings file called robots.txt. Another 68% were also blocking Claude and Perplexity's crawlers. This means when shoppers ask AI assistants for product recommendations or brand suggestions, your store is invisible. It's not a ranking issue. You've literally locked the door.
What We Found
The 3 most common failures across 20 UK e-commerce/fashion sites on Shopify.
Your site is completely invisible to ChatGPT's web crawler, meaning it can never reference your business.
Multiple AI crawlers are denied access, cutting you off from all major AI search engines.
Without llms.txt, even AI crawlers that are allowed in don't know which content to prioritise.
The Fix for Shopify
The most impactful fix is editing your Shopify robots.txt file to allow AI crawlers access to your site. Shopify made this customisable in June 2023, and here's exactly how to do it:
1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Settings → Apps and sales channels → Online Store → Open sales channel**. 2. Click **Themes**, then next to your active theme, click the three-dot menu and select **Edit code**. 3. In the templates folder, look for a file called **robots.txt.liquid**. If it doesn't exist, click **Add a new template**, choose "robots.txt" from the dropdown, and create it. 4. Inside this file, remove or comment out any lines that read `User-agent: GPTBot` followed by `Disallow: /`. Do the same for `ClaudeBot`, `PerplexityBot`, and `Google-Extended`. 5. Save the file and verify by visiting `yourdomain.com/robots.txt` in your browser to confirm the blocks are gone.
The second fix addresses the fact that 89% of the sites we analysed had no llms.txt file — a simple text file that helps AI models understand what your business does, what you sell, and which pages matter most. You can create one by adding a new file at your site root (via Shopify's content system or a redirect) that summarises your brand, core product categories, and key selling points in plain language. Think of it as a cheat sheet specifically for AI systems, telling them what your shop is about so they can recommend you accurately.

Fashion and e-commerce is one of the sectors being reshaped fastest by AI search. Shoppers are increasingly turning to AI assistants for curated recommendations instead of scrolling through pages of search results. When someone asks ChatGPT "what are the best sustainable women's clothing brands in the UK" or asks Perplexity "where can I buy affordable linen suits online," the AI pulls from sites it has been allowed to crawl and understand. If your store is blocked, you simply won't be mentioned — no matter how perfect your products are for that query. With an average digital visibility score of just 28 out of 100 across the sites we analysed, most UK fashion retailers on Shopify are leaving this opportunity wide open. Your competitors are starting to optimise for AI search. The window to get ahead is now.
